Statistics: 10 out of 10 read it (one during bookgroup – yes it is that short)
8 out of 10 enjoyed it.
Chosen for its brevity – we only had 2 weeks (rather than our normal 4) between bookgroups!
Poetic tale of a boy and his dog (and finding out how to write poetry). Found to be an easy read despite the oddness of the structure of the text. Also raised discussion of how we approach books and stories and our attitudes towards poetry.
There was a feeling that the strength of the story was in how much it conveyed in very few words (some repeated!) and that it was surprisingly touching. There was a story within the story and poems within the poetry – don't let this put you off as it was very readable. It mixed styles of writing – some felt to distract and others enjoyed the occasional “worm in the apple”!
The book included (at the end) poems mentioned by the boy in his tale – an excellent addition and, for some, the best bit of the book.
Verdict – genuinely different with a lot more to say than expected.
